What Is Deep Work?

Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that's becoming increasingly rare and valuable in our economy. In a world of constant notifications and shallow communication, the ability to perform deep work is a genuine superpower.

Cal Newport coined the term in his book of the same name, and research consistently backs up its effectiveness. The core idea is simple: schedule uninterrupted blocks of time for your most demanding work and protect those blocks ruthlessly. This means closing your email tab, silencing your phone, and letting colleagues know you're unavailable. It sounds obvious, yet most people never do it.

The Four Rules

The first rule is to work deeply — treat your focus sessions as seriously as you would a meeting with your CEO. The second rule is to embrace boredom. When you're waiting in line or sitting on the train, resist the urge to pull out your phone. Letting your mind wander isn't wasted time; it's training your brain to handle deeper concentration when it matters. The third rule is to quit social media, or at least be radically intentional about which tools you keep and why. And fourth, drain the shallows by eliminating low-value tasks that don't actually move the needle on your goals.

Getting started is easier than you think. Begin with just sixty minutes of uninterrupted focus each day. Pick one task that requires real thinking and commit to working on nothing else during that block. Build from there. Your future self will thank you.
